Party-goers were treated to an audio-visual glacial escape last December, as Swedish vodka brand, DQ Vodka (DQ meaning ‘Distillation Quality’), brought the northern hemisphere to the tropics of Singapore. Paying homage to its Nordic heritage, guests were told to prepare winter jackets as they partied in sub-zero temperatures, sipping on vodka-based drinks. Aptly namedNordic Lights, after the famed Aurora Borealis that paint the skies of the Northern hemisphere, the event was a night that delighted the senses of all present.
Beating out nine men at the inaugural Ramen Big Eater Challenge 2013 Singapore, was Japan’s celebrity competitive eater, Tomoko Miyake. Organised by Ramen Champion last November, Miyake walked away with a $10,000 grand prize, trophy and the winning title, clearing one giant bowl of ramen, 10 smaller bowls of ramen and 40 gyozas in 20 minutes.
Some 2,000 diners – more than double of last year’s turnout – all dressed in white, enjoyed a delightful array of performance and live music, at the second Singapore edition of Dîner en Blanc. The “chic picnic”, held at the Marina Barage, is one-of-a-kind public space dinner where the location is only revealed at the last minute.
UOB Privilege Reserve hosted 30 of their top clients this September, to experience a Krug Champagne Journey at the Fat Cow restaurant. Clients were treated to a Japanese fusion menu that was crafted to pair with The Krug Grande Cuveé, Krug Rose and Krug Vintage 2000 champagnes.
Celebrating its 10th Anniversary this October, was Greenwood Fish Market & Bistro, with a feast that was fit for royalty. Guests were invited to sample the widest spread of fresh seafood from around the world, along with buffet of starters, appetisers and desserts, with mains prepared à la minute from the kitchen.
The grounds of Keppel Island Plaza at the Marina Keppel Bay, played host to some serious Bavarian-styled revelry, with the inaugural Oktoberfest Asia held from 16-19 October. Organised by Dreamfields Pte Ltd and Matt Bennett of Beerfest Asia, not only did the event debut as “the definitive party venue” for all things Bavarian in Singapore, but also cemented its status as the party for celebrating life.
One of Singapore’s favourite stout brands, Guinness, kicked off its 145th anniversary celebrations, with plush pop-up bars and a new bottle packaging that pays tribute to the brand’s premium craftsmanship, quality and character. At a launch party in October, hosted by Guinness’ global master brewer, Fergal Murray, the brand unveiled its new Guinness Foreign Extra Stout (GFES) livery – an eye-catching script in yellow with metallic gold finish that gives the bottle a contemporary look.
To commemorate its expansion at ION Orchard, Itacho Singapore held an exciting array of activities on 13 September, that introduced shoppers and guests to a special Bluefin tuna cutting ceremony as well as the traditional Taiko Drum performance. At the celebrations, Itacho’s Master Chef demonstrated the fine art of filleting a giant wild Bluefin tuna fish, which weighed in at about 120kg, skilfully “deconstructing” the tuna that is prized for its tender red meat.
On 18 September, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) brought together all six of their celebrity chefs — Cat Cora, Joel Robuchon, Douglas Tay, Sam Leong, Kenny Kong and Li Kwok Kwong — for the inaugural RWS Food Affair. The Celebrity Chefs Dinner was held at Ocean Gallery at S.E.A Aquarium, and featured an exquisitely crafted specialty from each chef.
Taking Brazilian fare to new heights is the new buffet-style restaurant, Carnivore Appetite, which held its inauguration at Marina Square’s The Dining Edition. Launched by Starworth Pte Ltd, the F&B arm of Singapore-listed Low Keng Huat, guests gathered for an evening of good food and great entertainment, at the opening of the 4,682 sq ft outlet, that features a 13.5-m buffet line and a show kitchen – the first Brazilian restaurant in Singapore to do so – as well as an al fresco bar area that carries a selection of beers, wines and spirits, and views of the vicinity. True to tradition, the celebrations included a festive dance by Brazilian dancers, complete with brightly-coloured feathered costumes, that entertainer Kumar couldn’t resist joining in.
The good folks behind The Disgruntled Chef, chef-owner Daniel Sia and co-owner Chris Chong, celebrated the popular Dempsey restaurant’s third anniversary on 9 September. It was a heartwarming, intimate affair where friends of the chef and owner came together with well wishes, and feasted on chef Sia’s delectable creations.
Towering above Orchard Road, in ION Sky, is the chic Salt Grill by Luke Mangan, which played host to London No. 1 Gin’s Launch Dinner last July. Amidst the caresses of the clouds, guests indulged in a four-course meal, each course paired, of course, with London No. 1’s signature gin, mixed with other flavours by master mixologist Peter Allison.
Miele, the famous German-based home appliance manufacturer, held a special glass tasting session last July, courtesy of Riedel glassware. Led by Lisa Lee, Riedel’s Brand Manager, connoisseurs and oenophiles alike came together around a table to sample four deluxe wines: Cabernet, Oaked Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
