Heart Of Darkness: From Ho Chi Minh City Tras Street

What to look out for at one of the newest craft beer taprooms in town.

Craft beer taprooms are a dime a dozen nowadays. What makes Heart of Darkness, the very first international outpost of the Vietnam-based craft brewery, impressive is that 20 out of 30 taps are entirely their own (tasting flights start from $25 for four). Half of these are from their core range, such as the uber refreshing Futile Purpose Cucumber Pilsner, and the wildly hoppy Kurtz’s Insane IPA. Limited releases make up the other half—after all, the brewery is about experimentation, having produced over 250 styles since they opened in late 2016. If chasing new drops is your kind of fun, the weekly Fresh Tapped Wednesdays are when they switch out one of the taps for a never-seen-before limited release.

Craft on tap

There’s plenty of love for the local beer community too. Five taps are reserved for collaboration brews with local buddies, such as Countless Ages Old Ale—malty with delicious cocoa notes—which was dreamt up with Smith Street Taps. Guest brews take up the remaining five taps.

Another surprise, considering the foreboding swagger of the brand visuals: Thanks to cofounder John S Pemberton who’s a vegetarian himself, the menu has quite some vegetarian-friendly eats in addition to the usual bar grub, such as lentil chilli for the nachos/cheese fries, and Impossible sliders.
