Quintessentially British—The Monarchy Cocktail & Ultra Lounge

Entry to The Monarchy Cocktail Bar & Ultra Lounge on Tras Street is marked by an imposing black door, reminiscent of the one at 10 Downing Street.

If the name of the bar didn’t already give the game away, this detail certainly reveals that the 3,600sqft space is dedicated to all things British.

Cool Britannia rules

Other touches fall in place, from the banquettes adorned in the reds and greens of the Lords Chamber and the Commons Chamber at the Houses of Parliament; to artist Alex Wakefield’s portraits of British Royalty and personalities (for sale from $12,000); and tailor Kevin Seah’s dapper suit collection inspired by the British gangster drama Peaky Blinders.

The motley crew at The Monarchy

Trappings aside, those who have experienced lively Monarchy nights on the rooftop of OUE Bayfront would have seen how well the founders—Robbie Hoyes-Cock of The Podium Lounge and Steve Yallop of the former Pangaea at Marina Bay Sands—put together a good party.

At The Monarchy, their attention to detail follows through in the ‘Cool Britannia’ theme of the opening cocktail list, referencing a 1990s period in British history where a sense of pride in British culture grew with the rise of British pop culture led by Britpop.

Travel back in time with Message in a Bottle

18 bespoke cocktails pay homage to popular British pop songs through the years, including Message in a Bottle ($23) a tribute to The Police band hit song made with Scotch whisky, Dubonnet, sweet vermouth, orange liqueur and maraschino; and Paint it Black ($22), a Rolling Stones number distilled in a glass of Scotch whisky with dandelion and burdock citric cordial.

In high spirits at the Ultra Lounge

Come 10pm on weekends and public holidays, the British stiff upper lip disappears as a hidden door behind the cocktail bar swings open to unveil The Monarchy Ultra Lounge, a late-night music club, where the fun-loving can dance the night away with international house music DJs and live celebrity acts. Private VIP tables (starting from $2000) are available. Entry to The Monarchy bears a cover charge of $50 and the strict dress code is smart casual/jackets and heels preferred.
