JW Marriott South Beach: Glitzy, Historical And Yummy, All At Once

With its raft of glitzy F&B offerings, JW Marriott South Beach is the new must-stop on Singapore’s gourmet circuit.

Boasting refurbished colonial-era army blocks from the 1930s, South Beach, the newly launched 634-room property managed by JW Marriott is built on storied grounds comprising the former Non-Commissioned Officers club (or, as it’s more commonly known, the NCO club) and headquarters of the Singapore Volunteer Corps.

Food, glorious food

Akira Back, Tuna Pizza

Headlining the food and beverage offerings at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach is the eponymous restaurant of the Korean-born, Aspen-raised and Japanese-trained chef Akira Back. Dishes here are an amalgamation of influences: Jeju red snapper with chojang and orange tobikko ($23); the signature tuna pizza ($25), comprising wafer-thin slices of big eye tuna, ponzu mayonnaise, truffle oil and micro shiso topping; and our favourite, line-caught Pacific halibut ($30) pan-fried to a golden crisp and married with a rich soy beurre blanc sauce.

Beach Road Kitchen, Buffet Signatures

Then there is Beach Road Kitchen, a sprawling 247-seater all-day dining restaurant that lays out a sumptuous buffet spread. Check out their larder that is packed full of live seafood including sea snails, freshly-shucked oysters and lobsters galore! Other highlights include executive chef Stefano Di Salvo’s white truffle pizza served hot from their in-house pizza oven, as well as live stations dishing out local favourites like chicken rice and laksa. Ala carte menus are also available all-day round.

Booze and tipples

Court Martial Bar

Built on the former SAF Court Martial centre from which it gets its name, this 55-seater bar also pays homage to the former garage space it now occupies – you’ll find car-themed knickknacks like refurbished mirrors and metallic accents at your table.

Be sure to ask about the American oak barrels at the bar, which ages a different spirit for two to four weeks at a time, and subsequently used in signature Court Martial cocktails like the Heritage Sling and the Negroni ($23) which features a barrel-aged mixture with vermouth-infused raisins.

Decorated by famed designer Philippe Starck, speciality gin bar Tonic showcases a wide (and growing) array of craft and traditional gins along its shelves. Located in the JW Marriott Hotel’s lobby, the bar also serves up a bevy of other spirits, wine and beer. Fans of East Imperial tonics and soda should certainly sample their special gin and East Imperial pairings menu.
