Head chef Rishi Naleendra and general manager Gareth Burnett’s labour of love takes its name from the novel by Tim Winton that tells of the spirit of community between two working class families in Perth. The DIY paintings and tastefully mismatched furniture are visual details that evoke the defiant attitude of the cuisine.
The tasting menu is unpredictable, in a good way. You might find a mussel shell made out of papaya skin, algae and seaweed, as well as a deliciously springy French turbot off the barbie. And while there are definitely hints of chef Naleendra’s Sri Lankan heritage, it’s the way he readily weaves in strong-flavoured herbs and spices into unexpected combinations that stays on our mind long after the meal is done.
