This smart Cantonese restaurant at the Carlton Hotel is an institution in the Chinese restaurant scene, particularly well known for its classic dim sum dishes. Service here is prompt and professional. For its age, the restaurant has been well maintained, and remains a comfortable, elegant setting. It’s the perfect spot for weekend brunch with the family, where you know you won’t go wrong with classics like silky-smooth chee cheong fun and XO fried carrot cake. Don’t miss out on the other dishes at Wah Lok, though. The deep-fried century egg wrapped in minced shrimp is a clever modern take on the English scotch egg, all sharp, savoury and crunch in one bite. Also good is the sea perch stir-fried with olives and celery, the perfect balm for those looking for that bit of comfort. The star of the show, though, has got to be the poached crispy rice in crab soup. The clear crab broth is laced with strips of salted vegetable, then poured over crispy puffed rice for a delectable take on the traditional mui fan dish. Come hungry.
