Har Yasin Restaurant is a wedding & catering operator located in the charming Jalan Besar neighbourhood. The brand specialises in serving delectable Indian Muslim cuisine to guests in their vast 4000 square feet Allenby Ballroom specially designed to host wedding functions. Har Yasin provides fully-fledged wedding event services to couples looking for the perfect spot to host their special occasion. Their wedding event packages come with the venue rental, freshly prepared food in their onsite kitchen, a DJ & an emcee for the event, audio-visual equipment and more to ensure a smooth sailing event. The venue is conveniently located near Jalan Besar Stadium MRT, with ample parking space for guests who drive. The brand found success in serving the community through its event & food services business. As they grew, the management found several operational challenges that inhibited productivity. Har Yasin worked with NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to improve productivity through the WorkPro Job Redesign initiative. Har Yasin’s management found that the food ordering process was held back by miscommunication due to its manual order taking system. The manual order taking system resulted in duplicate and erroneous orders leaving the kitchen, causing wastage and delays in serving its guests. Additionally, when customers phoned to enquire about its wedding event services, older workers had to manually cross-check a physical calendar when checking for wedding event availability. This resulted in less-than-ideal customer service and long wait times for potential customers.
Through the WorkPro Job Redesign initiative, Har Yasin implemented an online ordering system and a hall booking management system to help streamline the ordering and booking process for its customers. The upgraded system included a delivery rider application that allows them to keep customers updated via order tracking and provide delivery riders with accurate customer information. Additionally, both hardware & software systems are fully integrated to ensure information is synchronised and up-to-date. Customers can now make orders, complete payments and book events through their online portal or mobile app.
The introduction of automated processes through implementing the right technology helped to reduce miscommunication between servers and kitchen staff, resulting in clear and legible orders going to the kitchen. Online payment systems lessen the need for staff members to handle cash and count change during transactions physically. The ordering process has been shortened from two to three minutes down to under a minute and only requires one wait staff instead of the previous five. Through the WorkPro Job Redesign initiative, Har Yasin’s staff are now able to focus on more productive and value-added tasks such as providing a higher quality of service to its guests. Har Yasin shared the productivity gains with nine of its older workers through a wage increment.
