Tim Ho Wan is known for serving mouth-watering food at an affordable price and is often called the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurant in the world! It is popular for its Baked Bun with BBQ pork, which has a crumbly and fluffy exterior, but a sweet-salty barbecued pork interior. The pork buns, together with their Steamed Egg Cake, Beancurd Skin with Pork & Shrimp and Pan Fried Carrot Cake, make up the ‘Four Heavenly Kings’. Singapore became its first international outlet; located at Plaza Singapura back in 2013. Currently, there are 11 outlets throughout the island.
Always wanting to strive for perfection, Tim Ho Wan constantly looks for ways to optimise its productivity and efficiency in the areas of ordering process, sales transactions, accounting, inventory tracking and sales reporting for the business.
Prior to the installation of an integrated point-of-sale (POS) system by Novitee, Tim Ho Wan’s workers will have to pen down orders before passing them to the kitchen for processing. Paper records of orders, inventory and daily sales were then tracked using a simple tracking system like Excel to be filed for accounting purposes. This posed a challenge as workers have to manually retrieve before referring to daily paper records and their independent system to track inventory and generate sales reports. Without a centralised system, it made the process a slow and tedious one.
Evidently, upon implementation, productivity and efficiency have improved positively across its seven restaurant outlets. The seamless order taking at the outlet makes it easier for its workers while the centralised reporting and inventory tracking system allows its finance and accounting departments to retrieve the necessary reports within seconds.
As the circuit breaker measures in Singapore started to loosen, Tim Ho Wan plans to hire new workers to cope with its operation and hopes to engage with NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to embark on the Place & Train Programme. This initiative entails new employees hired to undergo structured training plans and upon completion of the programme, they will receive a more competitive wage and job appointments. This programme will definitely benefit both potential job seekers and for Tim Ho Wan as well.
